Julie (105) - Tim paying the price

Scanning the milling throng, it was not difficult to alight upon Tim as a potential subject. The combination of black and white was irresistable.

Tim lives down on The Block and came along with the flow. I allowed him to finish his fag before asking him to pose for me. Once again, the raucous, loud-mouthed Aborigine faded and its place was taken by this softly-spoken gentleman. My guess is that Tim is in his early 40s. Although the ravages of nicotine and alcohol had carved deep lines into his face and wasted the muscles of his legs and buttocks, he remained a lovely, lovely Australian.

I'd really like to see this one in b&w. This is my kind of shot.

I could be flippant and say that it already is!!

I will work on it this evening. As I strode to work this morning, I was tossing up whether to convert any of my shots to B&W ... not something that flies high on my radar most of the time ... I spend a lot of time thinking about meaning and story ...

I'm going the other way, as you know, I'm not a wordsmith. I want to let the picture tell the story, I'm also moving more to b&w which is something I've wanted to do for quite a while. Not for all, just for those that I think it will give more meaning to. (Also for a couple that were washed out in colour and came up a little better in b&w - but that's cheating.)

I've always been a big fan of b&w portraiture.

B&W is very powerful ... tables ... puddles ... trees ... the more minimalist the better I tend to think ...

And I dont think of it as cheating ... not at all ... you are shaping the image just as I use words to shape my images ...

I love words ...

I think its cheating a bit when I do it for no reason other than to try and fix a shot that's not good in the first place, rather than adding something to a shot that already says what I want it to say.

Now I really need to do some work.

Ann was spot on with the B&W thought!

He was meant for it, and I'm not trying to be punny.

This is a great portrait. I like both versions.

Yep. B&w for me.
