Julie (111) - Russell from another era

As he was deep in conversation with another, my chat with Russell was very short: permission and name. He reminds me severally of figments from my childhood in the '50s: merino breeders from Haddon Stud down Goulburn way; or of detectives from one strikeforce or another sleuthing down Darcey Duggan, the notorious escapee of the '40s. He was decked out absolutely magnificently. It was only when I had those few short words with him that his paper-thin fragility became apparent.

Love this. I think the shadow works in this one. There's a directness in his gaze and something else - wistfullness?

Permission and name is pretty much all I do a lot of the time now, sometimes more if they are just hanging around and in the mood to chat. With several I don't even have names, just wave the camera at them and get a nod in reply, which bodes well for travelling.

pps - Made for b&w - I really must think before I post the first time, not in bits and piecese.

I agree this photo is so like the men of the old days ... makes the capture even more significant knowing it was taken in the current days. Well done Julie.

Love the black and white portrait.

I love it too, I wonder if instead of B&W, you'd just dropped the saturation down to an almost monotone, to give a sort of fifties hand coloured effect?

Interestingn idea.

Yes, I thought I might give that a burl this evening. Although, I hate it when they colorize old filums ... Alan Ladd riding off into the sunset in soft pinks and lemons ... ugh!!

Okay ... here is the tinted version ... I dropped the saturation down by 100% but had to up the contrast and down the brightness otherwise the definition of the face below the shadow just could not cope.

Interesting idea ... but I still prefer the Dragnet look of the B&W ...
