Peter is from Brazil and living on the Gold Coast with friends for a time. He was on a day trip to Noosa when I found him watching the setting sun at National Park.
Everyone who knows about this stuff speaks of the evils of blown highlights, but I think in this shot the harsh light serves to tell just how much really reflects off the ocean, even in the last half hour of daylight.

I wondered whether you were still doing this. Glad you still are. Sometimes you can't avoid blown highlights and yes, it does show the harshness of the conditions. I'm disappointed you didn't take more portraits in France, I would have liked to see what you could do with soft, European light.
PS. I've never seen a blond Brazilian.
I like how you are doing this DoF thingo ... and how you manage to select bland backgrounds to blur out.
He looks like he has 3D sunnies on like they sell you for Avatar!
I must be wierd cause I dont think this sun is harsh on the subject because you have only allowed it to splash down one side of his face. yet you keep good detail in the rest of his head, eg the crinkles in the neck.
Damn blast you Pierre ...
Ann, I would have loved to have completed the project in France, (maybe I will next year), but the reality of our situation was that we were with others all but two nights of the four months we were away, and really it became hard work to actually seek out subjects, so despite my best intentions, I let it slide.
Oh, and re:blond Brazillians, in a day or two (when she emails her name) I'll post a pic of his hostess!
Julie, thanks, I need to do something again to break out of what is really a bit of a formula though. I'll have to go back through these posts then Flickr I think.
To continue: When we started, I was all fingers and thumbs when it came to setting the camera in front of people, now that part comes automatically - as long as it fits the mould, and it seems that I'm quite unconsciously stamping 'em out of the mould at the moment.
Yes, I had recognised the mould with the coconut palm image. Subject on left, perspective to blurred background on right.
Having said that, 'tis only a mould to thou. To moi 'tis an objective!
It took me a while. When you mentioned blown highlights I thought you meant something to do with his hair. It was only when I read the comments... (d'oh!)
Lovely shot!
