Ann 17/100 - Che

From Germany via Philladelphia (hence the accent) and Cairns. I've seen him around town a few times with his dogs. He promotes and collects money for assistance dogs which help provide quality of life for the disabled.

Couldn't get a good photo, every time I had him lined up and focussed, he moved to either snap at the dogs or the tourists patting them. Prickly character. Cropped and taken to b&w to try and get rid of some of the distractions although I do like his red cap.
Postscript: I was curious about the legitimacy of his organisation and a little research shows that Che is an interesting and controversial character.

Wow, the SLR makes a difference in picture quality!

I love the black and white treatment, although think the crop is a little too close to his nose for my taste. Even in this profile shot, you've captured some prickle, although it's interesting in the B&W it could even be arrogance shining through.

I wanted to take out the sign on the left.

I had so much fun with the SLR I don't want to go back to the little camera. Unfortunately, if I don't I won't get enough shots. Its funny, I feel like a fraud with the little one, with the SLR I feel just a bit like a photographer.

I didn't and don't expect to become a portrait champion during this little exercise, but the range of emotions experienced one fifth of the way through has been quite incredible!

I'm rather pleased that it's got you using the SLR too, you will find it so much more rewarding I think.

Even thought his red cap is great, I agree with your choice to run B&W.

Lots here: you could experiment here and change it all to B&W but keep the cap red. I have seen that done somewhere in Virginia's Paris blog where she kept a scooter red but sepiaised the rest. Is that a word ...

Yes the nose is close to the edge but I like all the crap being cropped.

Finally, bite the bullet. Get the buzz of feeling legit. Go for the SLR and feel good about what you do! I think the distance you have travelled in under 20 portraits is just entrancing!!

I have absolutely no idea how to selectively colour a shot, and I doubt I could do it in Picassa anyway. I also have very little interest in spending hours at the computer post processing. Sometimes I'm not really sure why I'm doing this. I think you two are much more into serious photography than I am. My interest is travel photography and I want to be able to bring back some good shots so I guess I am viewing this as practice and mainly to get my confidence up to ask. I think what I would really like to be able to do would be to ask and then still take a candid shot.
