Ann 46/100 - Anthony and John

Finally plucked up the courage t0 ask a couple of the tradies working on the Surpreme Court. They were somewhat bemused but said okay. Then I couldn't get a good composition. Again the others were blurred, this time I think it was me trying to hurry. This is pretty much the full shot, I've only cropped off a tiny bit at the top. Maybe I should have zoomed out a bit to get more of them in. Took some horizontals but this one is better with the full lean of the body.

I"ve been watching for some fluorescent yellow. I've thus far avoided it because I can't find a background to make it work!

I quite like the composition actually. It's an old Australian craft, leaning on things so Im glad you've got it covered!

The lean is just terrific. Actually, the lean-er would be a great study in his own right: a BLF-er down to the marrow.

It is tricky trying to shoot two people in a shot. This is very busy. I know what you mean about the "hurry" feeling. Most unsettling. What I try to do is only approach potential subjects who are doing something and let them know that I want them to continue with their task and to ignore me.

He was really what I wanted but I couldn't do it with just him so had to take the two of them.

What I find is people are okay with the first 2 or 3 shots but after that, round about shot 5 when you are starting to get towards what you want I feel them getting edgy and uncomfortable and thinking (or saying) haven't you got enough yet.

Yes,it does not surprise me that he was the objective.

Now, there are two aspects to what you say in your second comment just now. Firstly, if they are just continuing on with their work, I do not think this occurs. I just wait for them to do-move, do-move and I move-shoot accordingly. Secondly, could it just be YOU who is doing the "thinking"? Sure, if they say it ... but maybe you are putting this need-for-speed onus upon yourself. I mention this because I know it comes from within me and that is one of the reasons that I am moving before the shutter is fully depressed.

One thing I have learnt about portraiture with the p&s is that it won't handle movement. As yet I haven't had much chance to try the SLR with movement, one or two (one of which is okay) but mostly they are static although I have been working on the composition. Am hopeing to get some market and busker type shots while I'm away.

Ah, yes: Womelaide. When do you go?

I spend the second week of March doing the French Filum Festival - don't expect much opportunity there.

Your discussion today reminds me of the time I organised one of the guys from work to take shots of important people at an important event. He walked in with his very professional film camera and took just two shots. Don't you need to take more I gasped. Nah, they'll be fine he said ... and they were. We've got that kind of confidence to look forward to!

I fly down to Adelaide Friday morning, come back the following Thursday then get the train up to the mountains on the Friday for the Blue Mountains Music Festival.I may get fed up with carrying the SLR around with me and not take many (or any) at all. Really looking forward to getting out of town for a bit, its been a year.

"We've got that kind of confidence to look forward to!" - FAT CHANCE.

For me it's head off on Friday also, a day or two in Brisbane playing with some native bees, a week at Broom's head, and a few days coming back via a few other beaches or waterfalls.

Last time I did that I had the 'flu, and a few half complete tooth fixups, so took three photos. I suspect there may be more this time!
