Does the camera lie or does it see things the eye doesn't? I don't recall Michael looking so melancholy. He was quite animated, explaining preferential voting and the importance of putting the Greens first. He has a melancholic look in most of the photos.

He does appear melancholy and contemplative, although he has a long narrow face and the camera might capture that. He wears his commitment and dedication on his face, I think, too.
I do like the main image you have selected: it removes the busyness of his stall. He has very wrinkle-free skin for a fella who is quite grey.
You know, I do not mind a melancholic visage. Not all portraits have to be happy and beaming.
