Lance was filming "Fred" as he jumped or flipped or ... whatever one does on a skate-board. They were on the Elizabeth Street walkway through the newly renovated Redfern Oval where one can watch the "Bunnies" train morning and evening five days a week. This was a bit after 6pm so the sun was low in the west which meant that I got silhouettes from one direction and knickers from t'other.
I only took four shots which meant that I had to follow the action fairly closely to ensure that both Nathan shooting and Fred jumping were in the shot. The clarity of the image suffered as I am not sure how to focus whilst on the move like that.
Maybe his knickers got ripped by always being stabbed in the bum by the goal-posts ...

Capturing movement is another issue that I hope to address before I reach 100 Strangers. I really would prefer not to take the pre-set sport option as I am not in control of the settings. I guess if I am on Manual with a very fast shutter speed that should just about sort it. Am I anywhere close?
Lucky you, I've seen guys doing this in town and would to try but I'd need the SLR which I've never had with me. I like the silouhette on the left with him jumping. I was wondering what happened to his shorts. I think you've done a good job of freezing the action. The other thing you could try is to pan and blur the background. Can't remember what the settings are for that, have got it at home somewhere, it was in the stuff they gave us at the photo course. When are you doing yours?
Eastern Suburbs Community College stuffed up the dates on their site and the dates the instructor could manage, so I have a credit until the next term which I suspect starts after Easter or maybe Anzac Day. 6 hours each on consecutive Saturdays.
Oops just realised I have called the cameraman by two different names. He was definitely Lance ... no idea where the Nathan came from.
It's amazing what a little cyclone can do to a camping holiday by the sea!
Glad to see you two have been busy!
Was wondering about the holiday at the sea Peter, reminds me of the old days when cyclones always seemed to thwart our Christmas holiday plans at the beach.
Julie, you set yourself quite some task here. I have tried capturing skate boarding action and found it nigh on impossible to freeze at the pose I saw in my minds eye. Add to that the difficulties with the light and trying to get two people doing interesting things at the same time and I reckon you have done a terrific job. I don't think I would have attempted it.
This week's Digital Photography newsletter has the instructions for panning.
Goodo ... I will have me a read over the W/W and then try to find another group of boys behaving like boys ... probably the skate board bowl at Bondi ...
