Taken using portrait techniques and a far more difficult subject than most.

Cats are people too!

Very baaaad people though! :-)

I have to admit that is one challenging face, and offer a begrudging well done!

Yikes ... here I go again being challenged!! Lordy yesterday it was medians and standard deviations ... today ...

s/2 = 1/200 is fast therefore shutting down the light

ISO=100 is also shutting down the light

F4 is medium and opening up the light.

The only reason I can think of to set the aperture to F4 is to shorten the DoF ... which is what has occurred.

Am I close?

Or to increase shutter speed at the lower ISO?

From memory - I was using the flash so the fastest shutter speed the camera would let me use was 1/200 (remember last Thursday?). I possibly then had to change the ISO or aperture, probably aperture as I had been shooting her in sunlight hence the ISO. This shows the same problem with shade that I have been having. I was having real difficulty with exposure (and really annoying the cat) some of the sunlight ones were over exposed, a lot of the shade ones were under exposed, then there were two or three that weren't too bad and this is one. I have a better one but its full cat and she isn't looking at the camera. I like using the 50mm lens on wide aperture as it normally gives me good results but this was the first time I've tried it with fill flash.

Nice looking photos. Which way was the flash pointed or aimed? Ceiling...wall...umbrella. It makes a difference. But what you got is nice enough and, as you probably know.

Yeah! Love it! Those eyes are so nonchalant.
I got my new camera through the post. It's a Nikon D40 with a little 18-55mm lens. My old S2 had an amazing close-up feature and a much bigger zoom so I feel like I have my hands tied already. I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. I'll save the manual for the flight home on saturday.

OMG, Abe is giving me positive feedback! I'm not worthy. I am sincerely flattered. Unfortunately, I only have in camera flash so can't point it anywhere except straight ahead. Which is why her ears are on the way back and she's getting ready to bolt.
