Julie (136) - Luke spreading the word

Luke was in deep shade at the entrance to Manning on campus. He was handing out leaflets for the Socialist Alliance. I took his leaflet and asked to take his photo in return. He was shy but agreed without hesitation. He was keen for me to finish though.

So the only difference is a doubling of the s/s which dramatically reduced the amount of light getting in. Not sure why I did this. I was still in the same spot.

Which one gave you the best exposure reading? The 2nd presumably.

Bing Lee have the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens on special for $135 till the end of June. It gets good reviews for what it does for such a low price (rrp seems to be $149). Teds are now selling my tripod for $20 less than I paid - typical.

What I learnt from Marko on Thursday is that adjusting until the exposure is on the zero is subjective. There are times when I know that my eye likes even a full stop underexposed which is probably what I thought here - and it did not work. When I asked him about the fog, he said to look at the spread of the histogram and then overexpose half a stop and maybe even a full stop to get the highlights in.

Like with many things: you learn the technicalities and then you have to apply them according to your own sensibilities.

So, now I am reading about the histogram and trying to absorb into my soul what the histogram is telling me so that I can "see" it in the image as I take it. Marko calls it knowing your own camera.
