Julie (33/100) - Fence crashing

Brad had no problems with me taking his photo as he watched the South Sydney "Rabbitohs" play a trial match at the renovated Redfern Oval.

I took this on Av with an AWB of shade and an ISO of 400. I am also experimenting with varying the number and position of the focus points. Way to go on all this learning caper still.

My preference is the 2nd one by far. With the focus I try and make sure that at least one of the focus points is on the eyes, half depress the shutter, then recompose the shot to what I want. The theory is that the face and especially the eyes will be in focus. Keep forgetting I can change the AWB.

You were on Av - what setting did you choose? I haven't done that yet.

Ummm ... I did not choose any setting on Av .. shall have to read my manual again ... I did not know there were settings with Av ... you mean Fstops and speed settings ... I thought that Av did that bit for me ... yikes!

I am starting to use Av to get the depth of field ... the blurred background if the foreground is close enough ...

My understanding, with the SLR, is that AV (Aperture priority) is where you set the aperture (F stop) and the camera sets the appropriate shutter speed. Tv is Shutter priority where you set the shutter speed and the camera sets the appropriate aperture. On Manual you set both, on Auto or P the camera sets both. What camera are you using now?

According to Peter on Av to blur the background you set the lowest F stop number for the lens you are using. I think that's what he said. I want to try this but haven't been out again with the SLR.

oops ... just printed that off ... shall sit in my courtyard and practice ... I always practice at home or in the laneway behind ... so that when I go out I am a little bit on top of it all and don't get so easily flustered ... that could quite possibly explain why I am not getting the blurring that I was half expecting ... and why they turn out darker that I was thinking they would ... double oops ...

just got my hearing aides ... everything is soooo loud ... especially this keyboard ...

I can't cope with all the AV, Fstop stuff and let the camera do the thinking with a few basic settings from me. I know I will never be a pro this way but I've always dismissed it as a boy thing -- I admire you ladies for trying.

Don't look at me, I'm still on the P, Portrait or Auto setting. Just because I know the theory doesn't mean I can use it. I even did a 2 day course when I got my first SLR about 5 years ago. Don't think I've ever used what I learnt and have forgotten most of it.

Ann, it confuses me why you like the second image that I posted today instead of the first image.

To me the second image is boring. It does not show why he is so much taller than me: it implies that I am sitting on the ground. It gives absolutely no context whatsoever. And there is a shadow on his face from the cap.

Whereas the first image answers all those questions in a relatively humourous way. Does the first image not actually qualify as a portrait as we cannot see the face?

To me the second one shows his character the first is just a bloke standing on a bike looking over a fence. I often like things other people don't and vice versa. I also often can't define why I like something.
