Happens to me all the time, which is why I try and get more than one shot if possible. I often find the instrument or hand is in focus (which would suit Julie down to the ground) but the face is out.
But but but ... there is no reason to have the eyes open in a portrait. None at all. If a musician is carried away with the sound and the emotion of the music, then it is totally legit to capture him with his eyes closed. I did it somewhere up to 100 and it worked a treat.
